hello would just like some advice about buying this car. some guy is selling his 1998 XJ8
he said for the last 4000miles hes heard a noise coming from the engine i contacted him asking him for more information about it. he said he got it looked at and the mechanic said he thinks its "the chain tensioner and nothing drastically to be worried about" and ive just been looking up and this is a common problem with XJ8s. i was just wondering is it worth buying? and how much would it cost to get repaired? thx

To do the timing chains properly would cost just over $2k. That would renew all chains, guides, and tensioners. If the chains fail, you could be looking at a new engine. It is a big deal, but once the tensioners are updated, these are very solid vehicles.
Search the XJ8 or XK8 forms for tensioners. You will find more than you probably want to know.

Try this link for tensioner information:

Look alphabetically for 'tensioners'.
The secondary ones are the ones that most often fail, and take the entire engine with it. Most only replace the secondary ones. About $1000 at a dealer, $800 at an independent, about $200 DIY. Plenty of information and pictures on how to do it.
It is not a difficult job. While an experienced hobby mechanic, I had never done that work and finished in 4 hours while detailing the engine.
