1998 XJ8L-Trunk button does not work

I am new to this forum, but would certainly appreciate some help. I have had this XJ8L for about a year and a half now and love it. About 6 months ago the button on the remote stopped opening the trunk. I replaced the battery but it was not that. From there I noticed that none of the buttons, including the one on the trunk itself, will open it. Now I have to manually open it with the key. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem. I have looked for bad fuses, but have not found any.
Thanks.

One other thing. I do not believe that it is the valet button/switch. I know that when it is in "valet" mode, when you hit the trunk release button that is in the car, it makes a chiming sound. This makes no sound, just does not work. The button in the car does nothing, the remote does nothing, and the button on the trunk does nothing. Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Thanks.

@roswellman
You more than likely have the same issue jag_genius suggested, ie damaged wiring on the wiring loom running down the right hand trunk lid..... strip it back and take a look
(All of the trunk features are dependent on this single wiring loom and it wears with time. The faults can be no trunk lights, no remote trunk unlock, trunk open warnings on the dashboard info centre...)

I agree with jag_genius & SARC, I had the same problem 99xj8, dealer said it was the wiring harness $400 item, I passed & use the key.
jag_genius & SARC: I have a partial spare harness from a trunk lid I replaced. What do you think about isolating the actuator wire and splicing in a section from near the plug to the actuator...?? Thanks RAE
