Default 1998 XJR Knock Sensor location?

Hello all,

I have researched in this forum for pictures or exact location for this part and have not seen any. I have to replace my knock sensor to pass AZ inspection. I read that the sc version V8 is much easier than the NA version, but still cannot see the sensor on top of motor (as opposed to under intake mantifold).

Is this an easy install for a novice?

The pic is from an '04. '98 has them in the same location, just different sensors.

I think you have the NA/SC complexity turned over. The NA ones are accessible without removing the intake manifold. They are in the same place on yours but the supercharger is bolted on top.

The hose is nice also -- makes sure you replace it if you have to go in.

Nice step by step, EXCEPT the OP asked about a XJR and there is a big old supercharger in the way.

I know, but AFAIK the knock sensors are in the exact same place.
And the OP asked about the location, didn't he? ;-)

Cheers,

David

Well, no. In context (ie: Is this an easy install for a novice) the location question was secondary to ta question of effort and skill to do the job. And the SC is different.

However, the link is a great write up for the NA engine and thanks for posting it.

Thanks DavidN. This will help a whole lot! Great step by step.

Now I need to find a post on how to remove my SC on motor. I think I'll be good to go.

If anyone knows a link to remove the SC on 98 XJR, much appreciated!

Looks like a right sensor for a 98.

Merry Christmas!

Thougfht I'd drop a line on how I'm doing on this repair. I almost have the SC removed (am stuck on how to remove intake elbow).

Question: once teh SC is removed, will that allow me to remove and replace knock sensors? Or will I need to remove more components?

This is a big job! See my pics of project so far...

Update:

I missed the pdf that jimlomardi posted on how to remove SC the intake elbow removal. So I finally removed the SC and changed out the knock sensors! Teh left one was teh bad one, it was melted over on right side. I replaced both.

Unfortunately, I am not done ...

... when I was pullig out the SC, I broke the hose connecting the left and right fuel rails. My job just got bigger. I guess I need to now remove the intake manafolds and remove the fuel rail to replace the piece I broke.

I"ll post 3 pictures of what I broke. I wonder if I have to remove the intake mantifolds and the fuel rail for this job? Anyone know?

Update:

I hope I haven't totaled out my car here on this project ... all thi started with just needing to replace my knock-sensors.

So, a few weeks ago while removing the super charger, I broke the fuel rail hose connecting left and right fuel rails. I had sticker shock on the OEM part ($160 - Jaguar - North Scottsdale , AZ), so I went to carepartsestore.com and purchased the part for $125 shipped (not the best website to buy parts, super slow shipping and terrible communication - I will not be going back even to even save 20% off wholesale). I installed the fuel rail hose no problem and began putting the motor back together ....

Didn't get far ... When I was installing the passenger side bolt on supercharger, I was torquing down the bolt to 18 - 24 Nm when the unthinkable happened; the bolt broke off inside the engine block. See Picture.

DISASTER!

I went to harbor freight tools to get a bolt extractor kit to see if I could take bolt out myself, to no avail. My bits keep braking off.

Gentlemen, be straight with me ... did I just total out my car? Or is there a another way to get that bolt out with out hurting the engine block?

'. . . bits keeping breaking off'. What are you doing to break bits? They should drill into a bolt even if it is an '8'. Left hand bits are also made.

One of many reasons why professional mechanics charge the big bucks . . . or a least the dealer/indy.

I have often found that once a bolt breaks, the remaining part of it will back out easily. Obviously not in your situation.

Are you using an "easy-out" to retract the bolt and breaking drill bits? I am sure you will get it out if you go carefully. What bits are breaking? If it is drill bits, perhaps go out and get a couple high quality ones. There are lots of junk drill bits out there.

Keep us posted

You have not "totaled the car" YET!, at least according to the picture.

GET THE FIRST HOLE YOU DRILL IN THE CENTER OF THE BOLT! Here's how.

First, get a center punch and carefully punch the bolt end exactly in the center. Then get a set of good quality drill buts . Left hand screw would be best. use a variable speed drill motor and be very careful to hold the drill vertical to the work. measure the hole depth of the hole on the opposite side and mark the drill bit with some tape wrapped around it so you do not drill too deep. Do this for all the drills you use.
Start with a bit about 3/32" inch or a little smaller and drill a hole using the center punched hole as a guide. Drill to just less than the depth marked with the tape. Use a little oil as you drill. Now drill the same hole with a 5/32" bit. Drill with your third bit to the size recommended by the e-z out manufacturer. If you use left hand drill bits, the bolt will probably start turning out by now.. If not, use the easy out.

Since you say you broke it going in, either you were cross threaded or you overtorqued. If you overtorqued, then removal should be easy now that the bolt broke. If you are cross threaded, you have probably stripped the threads. If that is the case, then you will need to install a helicoil repair thread. You should either get some help with that, or carefully research what to do, It is relatively simple, but there is little room for error on that one!

I will say it again.
GET THE FIRST HOLE YOU DRILL IN THE CENTER OF THE BOLT. That will keep disaster from occurring, especially if you have to helicoil.

All,

Thank you all for your help! Extracting the bolt was a beast. It actually got much easier when I shot a little WD-40 down in the housing. Came right out. Phew!

I replaced knock-sensors, re-installed the supercharger, intake elbow, and ERG unit. I'm about to install the throttle body however, ran into another question ....

The vacuum lines. I do not remember the set up or where they go. Hind sight, I should have taken better notes or a picture before I pulled all teh hoses apart.

Can anyone direct me on where these ends go? along with the "T" piece too? I have a picture below that I have labelled A. B.C. & D. I also drew red lines that show where the other ends of the vacuum hoses are that I did not remove for this job.

Can anyone help with these locations?
