1999 headliner question
hi all - above the back seats the headliner fabric is starting to pull away. was looking to bring it in to a few good upholstery shops int he Bay Area for a quote. Anyone have this done recently and what was the approx cost? I believe the only way/best way is to remove the headliner from the rear door and recover while it's outside of the car. anyone else have other info to consider - or a good shop they recommend?
thanks

Look at this thread "How can I fix/change sagging....
Hi supraman
I have the same problem with our 2001 XJ8. I have been putting off doing anything about the headliner. Too many other repairs that our car has needed with the last 8 months.
I had such good intentions about fixing ours that I emailed it to myself. I found this thread back in Feb this year "How can I fix/change sagging headliner (02 VDP'). Look at post #6 - the member had his done at the Jaguar dealership in Dallas but it will shed some light on what to do.

Hi All, Scheduled my XJR to go in and get a new headliner next Monday. The total cost out the door, including recovering the sunroof and main headliner came in at 360. would have been 210 without the sunroof. The headliner color was 1 of 30 on a sample pack, and looked very close if not the same as the original. Once this is done, I'm moving to the hopping rear right tire. just wanted to let everyone know the cost for the headliner replacement in the bay area.

Yeah, they're called "Saggy Stoppers" I think. I used them in my car. I know it's a cheap fix, but it will do until I get around to fixing the sagging headliner permanently. I have four of them, one in each corner of the rectangular indent over the back seat. It keeps the headliner off the rear passenger's heads, and isn't terribly noticeable. Do a Google on them. They are like clear thumb tacks with curly pins.

"Has anyone tried putting headliner adhesive in there, pressing it in with foam rubber while it dries? In other words, is there a way to repair this without redoing the entire thing?
"
I hate to admit it, but yes, I tried that in my younger day. The problem is that the headliner sag is not a failure in the adhesive, but rather a failure of the foam material hat is laminated to the liner and then glued to the board. So, squirting glue first soaks through the fabric and looks like pure c**p, and it only adherese to more failing foam on the fabric side and the board side, which tehn further fails. Save the $5.00.

When I was a poor college student I had an Audi handed down to me with a sagging headliner. I progressively cut out swaths of droop but the foam bits left behind kept littering the velour seats until I had finally scraped together $200 for a new liner. It was a lot of money to me at the time and I remember feeling what a thankless expense it was. It's not like I could impress anyone by saying, "look at my new headliner!"

I used the Saggy Stoppers found at my local AutoZone ($5 'ish), but I had no idea it was so cheap to get done professionaly. That will be my next larger expense for sure. In the mean time, the Saggy Stoppers work quite well. They are clear and don't show too much. Just be sure to measure distances to space them evenly, or they will show a lot more since the fabric is pulled to them. If you did not know it, you would assume they were stock equipment though, at least in my case where I only used 5 at the rear and spaced nicely. I've seen similar buttons on stock applications before.

I think they all tend to sag right by the rear seat, there. It was mentioned earlier and was very correct, the fabric separates from the foam. If you try spray glue, it seeps right through and doesn't hold anyway. It makes it uglier. I know first hand.
I paid $45 for a headliner replacement kit, removed the whole thing from the car, scraped off the old liner, and installed the new one on the stock cardboard. It was hard to get it back into the car without bending it. I actually removed the driver's seat to do it. Came out great and is still holding up 3 years later. Took me about 4 hours with no experience.

ok, new headliner looks good but the job isn't finished. once they dropped the old headliner and started working on the sunroof, they found one of two plastic clips (that hold the 4 inch portion of the under roof cover) broken. I had them install the headliner but not the trim around the sunroof so i could order the clip and have the job done right at a second visit. the clip is about 4 inches long, one on right and one on left. anyone know where i can get a replacement clip and a possible part number? thanks - picts will be posted once complete.

Sunroof components - clips - here are possible part numbers
Hi Supraman
Here is the information I was able to get from JPEC and internet research:
1999 XJR Sunroof parts.pdf
Call one of the Jaguar dealer part dept (two of them listed in the PDF file). Both of them are Jaguar Forum sponsors. Nalley gives 15% discount on parts and gives free shipping on orders over $25 to forum members.
