1999 Jaguar XJ8L ASC Restricted Performance

I was driving and the ASC code appeared, the restricted yellow light was flashing, and the car slowed down. This lasted about 3 min, and the car accelerated normally again. The problem has recurred a few times more, but only lasts minutes. Please explain

The first step will be to find out what codes are stored. Your local parts stores can read these for you, but you should probably invest in a reader yourself. Below is a link to readers that members have used:
