1999 Jaguar XJR questions
Hi all!!! I just bought a 1999 Jaguar XJR. Love the car. Looks and performance is why I bought it. Not to mention a pretty good deal w/86K. I did do some research before I bought the car. I do have so questions though.
1. I heard three major problems have been the Throttle body, The tensioner and chain breaking, and The sleeve in the cylinder bores. How can I tell if any of this has been changed. The guy says it was certified pre-owned, but anyone can say that.
2. Performance my fav.. I am going to get the underdrive pulley from Minasgallery. But is there any other reputable performance parts stores. I do my own work.
3. It feels like I wasn't getting full throttle so I looked under the pedal and found a stopper. As I took it off I found two wires on the back, so I know its a switch of some sort, But to What. I put the stop back on untill someone can verifiy what it is and if i can bypass it.
4. I would like to put a remote start and nav system in, but one of my friends says dont do it. The electrical is very shotty.
5. How can I reflash the computer to remove the govoner. I heard they top out at 155.
I can't comment enoughon the interior. It has a whole differentfeel. I have had BMW's, MBenz's but this feels warm. its a nice feeling.

Welcome
I will try to help you out on certain questions as far as my knowledge goes lol
1- These two , throttle body and timing chains can be a real problem for any car not solely XJR . So, cleaning might work marvel to throttle body , timing chain should go very long time .I think your main concern should be compressor unit
2- I think what you saw should be the switch that activates kick down when you floor your car . It shfits down as much as two speed down during hard accleration thanks to this under pedal button
3- N/A
4- Arden
5- Tuning your PCM is possible considering XJ40 can also be tuned lol
Interior is just nice but I prefer X300s over X308s though

Congratulations on buying a fantastic car! I have owned my 1999 XJR since new - 115K miles - no problems of any significance, only routine maintenance expences, utterly reliable and still delights visually and sensually.
Various performance upgrades at http://www.eurotoysltd.com/
I would strongly advise against defeating the governor. Having spent many hours at triple digit speeds in the car, the front end gets very floaty at over 150mph - the aerodynamics just don't do well at heroic speeds. Perhaps a front airdam would help, but the nose is already low enough to incur damage from many concrete parking barriers....

Thanks for the quick reply's. Now that I search more and more, around the site, I am getting nervous seeing the only posts being XJR blowing motors. I have a very heavy foot which makes me scared to drive it and breaking something. I like the style so much the interior is mint luxury at it's highest. No scratches dings or dents. But I dont want it to end up being a money pit. I have too many of those. My boat, my girlfrind my weekend driver. ahhhhhh..
So I guess Transmissions are terriable in the 99's
Engine's exploded either being tensoners or the sleave's.[X(]
I wish I could tell if anything was done for prevent this. I ran a carfax but it doesnt say much.

If you dont have repair maintence records from the owner, find out what dealership took care of it and what was done. Theyll have the maintenance records on file. If unsure of tensioners, have one of the cam covers pulled and inspect, if plastic bodied upper tensioner, replaced both sides. If metal bodied and cam cover gaskets in good condion, not flattened out, bolt everything back up and you probobly wont need new gaskets. other than that, change the oil every 3k with conventional, 5k with synthetic, MAINTAIN fluid changes on everything to not have unreasonable maintenance issues....
