Default 1999 VDP blown tranny

I think I blew my tranny last night - only 92,000 miles!#$$@#.
While starting from a red light, my car lurched forward and then cut out. This happened twice. So, I pulled off the road, turned the car off and re-started it. Same thing.
A lot of resistance going forward, a couple of clunking sounds, "Transmission Failure" light came on.
Out of first gear, car runs normal.

Looked for rebuilt tranny - eBay new for $2400 (Bit of a pig and a poke as I know nothing of the rebuilder.)
Local shop been in business for 60 years with a great reputation wants $3900 for a rebuilt tranny from "a known rebuilder": 3 year, 500,000 miles warranty - like I could drive that far in 3 years! $4900 installed.

I'm leaning on replacing it myself but need to know of a reputable rebuilder. Ideas?

Does this year need the timing belt and gear fix? If so, when does one do that? before 100K

Also looking on simply buying a different VDP. Was 2003 a good year?
When did they switch to the Al-loo-min-ee-um body!
Marcus

1999 VDP
1992 VDP parts car!
1992 XJS, V12 - beautiful but clearly built with the wrong transmission. This is the same tranny that's in my 1983 REVCON motorhome - should have used the J shift 4 speed like my '92 VDP in my less than humble opinion!

The aluminum cars started in '04. As far as timing stuff goes, all X308's built before (if memory serves) mid-2001 still have the old style tensioners. If yours haven't been done, they are probably due for replacement. If you go for a 2003, those came from the factory with the upgraded metal tensioners.

You could also switch over to an XJR The XJR's have a very strong Mercedes transmission.. Far fewer failures than the transmission used in the non-supercharged cars.

Well if you are into pigs in pokes Jaguar XJ8 XJ8L Vanden Plas Automatic Transmission V8 4 0L 1998 1999 | eBay

Whatever you decide to do, get this done too. It's the primary cause of the A drum failure which is what you have. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ng-kit-146100/

2003 is the best year for x308. Last year so they address a lot of issues. I spent $2,400 to get my transmission rebuilt and installed. Shop around. If you have a place to keep at parts car, you might want to get a running car and save yours for parts.

If you can pull a tranny, you can fix and A drum.

I am going to document replacing the valve on a tranny with a broken A Drum I am fixing as well, which I anticipate to be a walk in the park... I'll know by the end of next week anyway when it should be finished.

I would find this most useful. Please keep me posted. Thank you - I love my Jags. I'm driving my '71 Ford F100 in the meantime - which makes me understand more and more why I love my Jags!

The valve replacement was pretty straightforward - except the filler plug was hard to find.
THE FILLER PLUG IS ON THE RIGHT SIDE, TOWARDS THE REAR, ABOUT PARALLEL WITH THE EXHAUST PIPE!
Sadly, the valve replacement did not fix my loss of first gear problem.
For the price of a tranny rebuild/replacement, I'm looking at a 2002 VDP, garaged, original owner, 82,000, $4900, silver. Any thoughts?!

There is a *chance* that the A-drum cracked and did not break which means no metal fragments flying around in side. (I just purchased an XK8 with this scenario)

You have to remove it anyway, so why not take the tranny out and see what you are dealing with? A-drum and peripheral seals/orings are less than a few hundred dollars. There are plenty of write-ups here and the 5hp24 diagram is readily available f you need it.

I know how you feel, the transmission failure was what killed my last X308. It went on me so I bought a used tranny from a Jag Breakers and spent 2 days putting it in the car.

Only for the replacement tranny to die 4 days later.

I may as well have taken £600 and thrown it out the window.

The X308 I've got now is going in to have a tranny fluid & filter change as well as the transgo valve installed in November. I'm not driving the car at the moment as I'm performing renovation works on it.

thank you for the support.
I've decided to give upon my '99 VDP. The differential also leaks requiring me to devise a differential "filling station" and there are also several other needling problems.

So, for my next car, I'm looking:
2003 VDP, 1 owner
2004 VDP, 1 owner
2006, Super 8

dsnyder586 - since you have the 2003, what advice would you give?
Specifically, how many miles would you expect to get out of a 2003? My '92 VDP went for 200,000.
Is the CATS problematic on the 2004/2006?
Is the Al body and drive train solid on the 2004/2006?
Since the 2006 is supercharged, did they also use a Mercedes tranny?!
Appreciatively, Marcus
