1999 VDP J gate locked

Greetings! Fairly new to the "Jag Community", purchased a beautiful 1999 Jag VDP XJ8, madeira red and AWESOME! Noticed a few weeks ago that the key when turned did NOT engage starter immediately? Having had a Mercedes SL600 with the delayed/auto start, this did not cause alarm. Then one morning (Part time use) I went to start, all dash lights lit, nothing, all went off, and wiper stroked, then started?
Today, started immediately and I could NOT engage J gate from park to reverse? Brake applied. Fortunately, after research here on first problem, I was educated to remove star screw and insert key to disengage shifter (J gate) Put the old girl away into garage, as I am headed to Barbados for a week.
Help? Advice?
Also, the gas shocks in trunk are shot. I easily removed them. Any advice as to a supply source?
Thanks!!
