1999 XJ8 overhead console schematics
Could anyone point to a source of 5 volts DC either in overhead console or on the left from the steering wheel. I am tired of conventional cigarette lighter cable (too bulky) and would like either have a cord routed from overhead console or from the left side in the bottom for my cell phone, which would be on the left side of the windshield.
Thanks in advance

I think you are going to have a tough time finding 5 Volts there. 12 volts, no problem. If you need 5 volts for your phone, you can do what I did for my Garmin GPS (which runs on 9 volts? or so) Locate 12 volts +/_ somewhere near where you want the phone to be. You can do this with a multi meter or a simple test light you can buy for $5 or so. Buy a spare car charger that has the voltage converter built in, open the case of the lighter socket end and find the wires for the +/_, (the center wire of the plug is positive and the outside contacts are negative) wire jumpers to these wires from your 12 volt source in the map light or wherever. Put the case of the lighter plug back together and make sure it fits somewhere in the enclosure you are using. If it doesn't fit you can remove the outer case, just make sure all the circuits are insulated with something (electrical tape?) Then plug the end of the cord into your cell.

Overhead Console R&I
Hi
Here is a PDF file for Overhead Console with Removal & Install information (instructions and illustrations). It shows how to get access to the overhead lighting and phone harness connector.

The JEPC (Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog) shows front mobil telephone harness in the overhead compartment (says "if fitted" in JTIS):

Solution found...
Thanks for your responses. I ended up opening the armrest console where I installed a Motorola T605 recently and did the following: took an old cigarette lighter cell phone cabe and soldered one wire to the center (+) and another wire to the side (ground). Since I had two separate wires (ignition and ground) left from the original cell phone, I connected those with newly soldered cigarette lighter plug. On the other side I now have 5 volts. I then routed the cord all the way to the phone. This way I no longer have the ugly cigarette lighter plug sticking out of my ash tray. The cover is not closed. Looks nice and clean.
