warrick, yes, your XJR is OBD2 compliant. All vehicles made in 1996 to now are OBD2 compliant. As for a scanner reading the codes, that is a question that is difficult to answer as all scanners will read the generic codes. But, every manufacturer has their own "unique" codes for special features. This is what differentiates between the $75 reader you pick up at your local auto parts store and the $3000 reader the repair places have.
If you have a check engine light, odds are the cheapo scanner will do what you need. If you think you have an issue with something other than the engine, then the more expensive reader will be needed. Keep in mind that you have multiple computers in your car and each one has a set of codes it can bring up. The cheapo readers only read the engine codes. The higher the price, the more likely they will be to read the chassis codes, powertrain codes, etc.
