Default 2000 4.0 X308 Transmission makes screeching noise

Hello all. As the title states, I'm having issues with my 4.0L 5HP24 Transmission. When it's hot it'll do a screeching whirring sound on the rear area of the vehicle. Then it'll jolt the car forward. It only does this on 2nd and 3rd. The rest of the gears work just fine, with the exception that if you accelerate a little too fast, you can hear the trans switching from 5th to 6th and back and forth until it finds the right gear. There's also an excessive amount of hear coming from underneath the car, so it's pretty safe to assume it's overheating. And like I said before, this only happens when the transmission is hot. When it's cool, it works perfectly fine. Now, the transmission is at 100k miles and there's absolutely no record of an ATF change. There's also this burning acidic smell once the trans is hot. I'm hoping it just needs an ATF replacement, but what do you guys think? Broken clutch? bad torque? Bad A drum? Let me know, thanks.

Any good transmission shop (and shop around) can rebuild for far less than a used Corolla would cost. But they should first open it up and see if you need a rebuild (and a Transgo Valve) or just filter and fluid. But only has five gears . .

I've already set aside the funds for mine . . .

I am thinking of starting to buy the parts for a rebuild, and then take it to a shop. I'm just wondering if it would be possible to possibly just set that aside for a while at least until the holiday season is over. lol.

Well. Just took it to an "honest" mechanic near me and he gave me a solid quote of $5,000 for a rebuild. If that's not insane, I don't know what is. How much should this cost?

$5k sounds about right. If/when you decide to have the transmission done, make absolutely sure that you get the rear main oil seal and cap seal that’s about 3” up from the main seal replaced.

Default UPDATE.

I found a guy with a 2000 XJ8 he's parting our for parts. Transmission has 77k miles on it. He's asking for $1250. Is this a good idea?

I buy cars that have major issues (like failed engines) and use the parts when I need replacements.(my own salvage yard)

I like to open the gearbox and replace the 'A'drum (forward drum) 'just because' with the updated stronger version.

You might also check the valve body and then install the used gearbox.

The gasket/O ring kit from ZF was about $175 several years ago. The frictions/steels are usually in great shape unless the box has HIGH MILEAGE.

Absolutely get that trans Eric! One thing I also forgot to mention was that you must flush out the transmission oil cooler lines following with compressed air.
