Default 2000 XJ8 with a Fail Safe Engine Mode

I have a 2000 XJ8 cream puff with 70,000 miles. It's a great car. However, when I try to start the engine I get a "FAIL SAFE ENGINE MODE" along with "ASC NOT AVAILABLE" The engine will not even try to start. This has happened two times before. The way I got it to start then was, press or release the cruse control button. That is not working now.

Has anyone had a similar experience ?

Thanks,
Bill Ardisson

Mine will intermittently (once every 3 months maybe) not crank. I release the key and it goes on the second try. Some here suggest jiggling the shift lever as the interlock can inhibit the starter. Do a search on "no start" and see what you can find. Good luck.

Please help, My XJ8 is still in a locked mode and will not start. I can't even get it started to to get it to a Jag Dealer. My nearest one is over 100 miles away.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Bill
