2000 xj8 motorola phone???
hi, hopefully someone out there can help me with this problem. i have just bought a 2000 xj8 which has the factory fitted (from new) motorola handset under the central armrest. i've inserted a new a sim card and the handset allows you to dial out and recieve calls but there is no ringing tone for incoming calls and the system will not operate through the stereo system/speakers (hands free). if you press the phone symbol on the radio facia nothing happens at all whether the car is switched on or off. i'm afraid i don't know model of the handset but it is not removeable from the car, it is attached by a house phone style cable. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most of us familiar with cars in the 98 to 02 vintage are only familiar with the motorola "star tac" type phone which does not have SIM card capability. There are no service peoviders for these type phones. You must have a variant we are not aware of.
If you can provide some additional detail, we may be able to help you as several of us are now quite familiar with the phone and radio wiring of the system.

In the mean time if you want to dig into your problem a little, there is a thread in this category called factory phone that has a lot of detail on the wiring. If your phone has a similar interface to the other style, then you'll have a module and a wiring harness that connect to the factory wiring of the car. The pin outs are pretty well documented.
you could start by identifying the wires and checking to see if you've got signal. If pressing the phone button dosn't do anything, you may have lost the CAN or AI-Net signal that communicates to the stereo head unit.
Since the sound dosn't come over the speakers you may have lost the "mute wire" or mute function.
