2000 XJ8 - occasional Fail Safe mode
2000 XJ8 120K
Intermittently this summer I've gotten ABS/Traction warning light. Usually no effect and it would disappear on next start - though check engine light stayed on.
Lately and randomly the ABS/Traction warning is accompanied by FailSafe limp mode. Typically at lower speeds - several times it happened in reverse.
I shut the car off and start again and "problem" disappears. Did a code read and only got P0121 so far.
Searching the web I've found suggestions to replace a brake pedal switch; some say replace ECM; some say throttle body (don't wanna go there!); some said low octane gas can cause (I'm guilty of buying mid-grade sometimes with SoCal prices!) Any chance that could be a factor?
Suggestions? Similar experiences?

This problem is not uncommon, I would check the plugs at the Throttle Body. TSB 303-58 addresses this problem, this is a link to my page addressing it TBoddyPlugs Hope this helps.

I had that problem with the failsafe mode.....Turned out it was the Mass airflow sensor.....I got away with buying some MAS spray and disconnecting the peice from the air filter, spray it down good and replaced it and it ran fine....Still have the abs error but havnt gotten an answer on that yet....Good luck.
