2000 xj8 overheating/temp guage says normal!!
hi, thanks for the swift replies to the eml problem i posted previously (codes 1071 1074). several hoses and seals have been replaced but whilst the car was sat (at the mechanics garage) ticking over for about half an hour the coolant began visibly boiling in the header tank but the temp guage was reading normal. any suggestions as to what may cause this? i 've read through other threads on overheating and am seeing horror stories of head gaskets/engine rebuilds etc. what would be the easiest way to find out if head gaskets etc are at fault as the car is still under warranty and if i could prove any of the worst scenarios it would be great to do it before the warranty runs out. all the best to you all, rod.

What do you mean by 'visibly boiling' ? The coolant should not boil at all unless the coolant filler cap is off. Did the pressure release valve open up ? Did the 'Hot' idiot light come on ? So you were in a mechanics garage and this happened - did the mechanic have a clue ? The water pump and thermostat on these cars have been known to fail, but it's not a big deal to replace both. Don't panic, yet anyway, but I'd keep an eye on that warranty expire date too !
