2000 XJ8 transmission rebuild...where to buy parts?
OK, I just recently took my XJ8 to the transmission shop and got a quote for a rebuild of $2847.53 plus tax not including possibly damaged "hard" parts. I have read in other posts some of the same symptoms I was having and believe the a drum is gone. I have never tried rebuilding an automatic transmission before but feel like I can. I have rebuilt manual trannys and rear ends. Can anyone give me any advice on where to get the right parts or what to avoid before I tackle this project. I have found parts on EBAY for less than $1000 total but not sure if that is a good thing.
Thanks in advance....

Other members have reported using transpartstech on ebay. If you do a search on this forum for A drum replacement you should get a lot of information. But I'm not sure you have enough posts to do a search. I think you need ten and must be a member for a couple of weeks.

Check out my thread, here- https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-bmw-x5-66718/
It's the rebuild of my X5 transmission, identical to yours except mine had transfer case bolted on the back.

Thanks for the info avt007! I think it is going to be very useful in the near future. As for now, I have gotten the tranny removed from the vehicle and getting ready for phase 3 (the overhaul)...Wish me luck.....it also appears to me that this is not the original transmission that came in the car. I bought it with 147000 miles on it which makes me wonder. I have seen a lot of complaints about these problems occurring at around 70k. Nonetheless, time for the fun to begin.....

UPDATE!!! Got the beast tore apart today. The A-drum has no cracks or splits. It actually appears to be in great shape. All of the bearings are good so far. I did find some sludge on the magnets but no chunks. I must say, I am a bit confused at my findings (or lack of). I have not disassembled the individual sections yet...waiting on parts to arrive. I have taken the pump apart an cleaned it out. There was a little sludge in it as well.
Anyway, so far so good. I would post pics of progress but haven't figured out how yet.
Thanks for all the info I have found on here!!!

Haven't tore open the a drum yet. I'm working on the f drum now. I haven't noticed anything about the freewheel in your post. Did you disassemble it as well? The manual shows it apart but I haven't been able to get the blasted spring clip out. Time to walk away.
The piston seals look very good in mine also. There is some discoloration the indicates some heat. Any thoughts?
Thanks

I have just finished putting back together the DE drum minus the clutches. On the D side there are hot spots on every divider section between the clutch plates. The other discoloration I was referring to was on the freewheel and the F piston. So far all of the o rings I have encountered look to be in good shape. Just got dark fluid everywhere like it is burnt. I tested the D and E pistons with compressed air after re installing and they are working perfectly at this point. I'm a little concerned as to if I should replace the torque converter.
Thanks

I had the the ole' p1722 fault code. Started slipping a little then went to limp. I was in a bit of a transportation crisis at the time so I did drive it several times in limp mode but of course every time it was turned off, the fault would reset and when I restarted it would slip again. Finally got my truck repaired so I could park it. I suspect that the heat came from that. I feel fortunate that I didn't do severe damage.
I'm a bit of a gambling man....lol.

UPDATE!!! Got C,D AND E all together on the bench. No knew surprises at this point. Gotta make a tool at work tomorrow to set it all in the housing. I decided to go with the original ring gears unless I hear a lot of harassment before tomorrow afternoon....lol. Also looking for a new converter.

Hi all,
Found the problem today....the dreaded A drum failure. I didn't notice until I took A and B sections apart. Guess I'll be searching for more more parts to buy.
Also wondering if I can get some info on a rebuilt torque converter. Mine only has 3 mounting bolts as opposed to 4 like the manual shows. I can't find any good info on the converter itself. Any advice?
Thanks!

Purchased torque converter today through [url=http://www.torqueconverter1.com/] I found on eBay. I called the number and talked to Johnny...he was very helpful and I saved some $$ by purchasing through the website. Cost me $245.00 plus $20 shipping. Also purchased new beefed up heavy duty A drum on eBay through (cascadetransmissionparts) for $193.88 with free shipping. I actually paid the extra eight bucks for shipping to get it here sooner. got a new filter coming that I also purchased on eBay for under 20 bucks. Hopefully by the end off next week I will be Rollin' again....
Just thought I would put this info out there if anyone was interested.
Thanks!
