The engine. I've not seen this work carried out, without the engine removed.

You need to drop the full suspension frame (and make sure you fix your engine, so it doesn't drop with it), then you can take out the lower bed plate (oil pan isn’t enough), and you will get access to the rods. I thought this was described in the JTIS, but can’t remember and can’t check now.

I guess the cam chains and gearbox will hold the crank from falling out?????

No no, there is no need to use the chains to hold the engine, that would only mean more work, just use the fead belt

Jaguar has actually a special tool to hold the engine, something like this (but then a tad smaller):

yep I stand corrected, Avos is 100% just seen the process on the JTIS disc, it means letting the upper shock bolts go, then the subframe, you're only looking to get a spanner in to release the bedplate.

You can buy dummy crank journals from SPX. I think around £60 for the set.

You can rent the support tool. Someone in a past post used a engine support tool that is commonly rented out for FWD vehicles when the front suspension is dropped out to work on the transaxle. The tool is supported in the fender lips running along the two sides of the hood.

Default Connecting Rod Bearings R&I PDF from JTIS21

Hi jays78zride

I created a few PDF files from the JTIS21 software that covers the Connecting Rod Bearings Removal and Install along with a list of what other parts and other assemblies that might need to be removed.

Here are the main 4 PDF files:

XJ 98-03 Connecting Rod Bearings R&I.pdf

XJ 98-03 Engine Front Cover R&I.pdf

XJ 98-03 Upper Oil Pan 4.0L R&I.pdf

XJ 2000 Front Crossmember R&I.pdf

I am not sure all these procedures need to done. Sure looks like a major project.

Mentions: twin fan and motor assembly, timing cover, front crossmember, Front Accessory Drive, Idler Pulley, crankshaft damper, intake tube from throttle body, intake tube / air flow meter / air cleaner cover assembly, purge valve, on-plug ignition coils, both camshaft covers, variable valve timing solenoid.

Also: oil pressure switch, crankshaft position sensor, air conditioning compressor, exhaust downpipe to oil body pan, oil pickup pipe, lower steering column, both front road springs, Remove lower nut and bolt from front shock absorber, remove steering rack.

And this is not the complete list.

The hands-on experts probably have a way to shortcut many of the items listed in these PDF files.

Hi
Alldata has the connecting rod bearings service time as 14.7 shop hours.
It also shows the part number for our 2001 XJ8 as NCC1612BA2.

The JEPC (Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog) lists the following:
NCC1612BA2 (color blue) NCC1612BA3 (green), NCC1612BA4 (yellow)

From VIN (F41863)
AJ83902 (blue), AJ83903 (green), AJ83904 (yellow)

These part numbers are for the half shell, so 2 of them are required per connecting rod. You will need 16 half shell parts to replace all the connecting rod bearings.

Gaudin Jaguar Parts prices for the NCC1612B parts numbers $22.20 $16.65 and $21.65 $17.59 for AJ8390 parts numbers.

I will post the other procedures that are not in the my earlier post when I am able to find all of them.
