Sensor fitted. The idle seems a bit high so I wonder if it's meant to be adjusted to the correct resistance when fitted. The TPS I did on my bike needed that. I might tweak it down a bit as I know which way it'd need to go. But at least the car is mobile so I can take it to get welded & that O2 sensor fitted as I can't get the old one loose.

 

You have to adjust the output voltage as close as possible to the value it should be. Or recalibrate tps with IDS.

 

So, what should the voltage value be? I couldn't find this info anywhere in the WSM.

 

Exactly what my question was going to be. Or do we know the resistance to set it too? as that's easier to do without really fine probes to stick your meter in the multiplug when connected.

The local specialist told me when he used to do them regularly, just put it about in the middle, disconnect the batt for 30secs, touch the batt leads together for 5secs (which clears all the adaptions) then reconnect & start the car, it'll then sort itself out. I forgot to do the battery bit & as I'm doing 13hr days today & tomorrow I won't get to try it till friday or the weekend.

 

I'm sorry I can't remember the Voltage. I found it out in some how to replace tps sensor video. I can look it from my -00 XJR. Just making sure that we talking about tps not the pedal position sensor ?

 

To reduce the idle speed, you need to rotate the TPS counterclockwise a bit (when looking at the TPS), i.e. rotate in the direction opposite to the rotation of the throttle shaft. When doing any adjustment to the TPS, disconnect the battery and reconnect afterwords. Switch the ignition on and weight for some 20-30 sec. before cranking (for the ECU to re-learn).

 

Aye I'd been thinking it over & come up with the same direction of adjustment, I plan to try it either tomorrow or the weekend when I get time.

It's dropped into failsafe mode again, I've not read the codes yet but at least the throttle still works so I suspect it's just 'TPS out of expected range' or some such code which adjustment will resolve.

 

Adjustments happened tonight & it's now behaving properly. I moved the sensor with the ignition on & live data showing on my phone from the ODBII reader as I knew the old one read 2% throttle in that condition.

Turning it anticlockwise as said worked, I got it down to 2.7% from nearly 4% & it went tight as the movement did one of the bolts up a bit. So I disconnected the batt, touched the terminals together as the garage said & then turned it on. I gave it 30secs before starting with the ignition on, it revved like a bugger for a second or two & then settled down to a proper idle within 20-30secs just like the garage said it would.

So that's this thread resolved, cheers for all the comments & help everyone. I'll deliver it to the garage for welding now, then put tyres on so I can get a new MOT ready for winter as a Jag is much nicer in the cold than motorbikes which are my other form of transport.
