Default 2001 Jaguar XJ8 Not deadlocking

Hi guys,

Got a small problem with my Jag, the car locks fine but it always used to beep on the second click of the alarm fob to deadlock. Well it doesn't do this anymore. I have ensured that all doors and the boot is shut but it continually does not beep saying it is deadlocked.

Any ideas?

I am interested in this also, as mine has never beeped, and I always thought it was odd. It does, however, flash the marker lights and make a small noise that sounds for all the world like a duck quacking. On all of the other cars I've had, on the second push the horn would sound, on this one it does nothing at all.

Does your horn still have two tones (hi-lo)? My Sovereign doesn't 'quack' like it should and I speculate that it uses the hi-tone horn to do this and I have a fault as I only have the lo tone which I will look at presently now I have the O2 sensors sorted.

Er...how would I check this, I never even knew it had a two tone horn!

Depending on the horn, you will find a diaphram tension screw located on the body of the horn itself. As the horn ages you may need to adjust the tension against the diaphram. If the tone from the horn (either hi or lo) is subdued, an adjustment can save you the money of replacements. Back the screw off a 1/4 or 1/2 turn and have someone energize the horn and slowly adjust for maximum output. There are 2 horns, one right side, one left.

I found the horn, but it is shrouded by the grill/bonnet so I am not sure whether I can get a screwdriver in there without taking the whole front of the car apart, which I am not very keen about doing. I can see the adjustment screw but I am not sure I can get a screwdriver in there with my hand! Am I just being dumb and can't see the wood for the trees with regards to getting access?

Are both horns the same, left and right?

No, one is high note, the other low note. I would have someone depress the horn button and see which one wasn't working, unbolt the horn and get it out where you can work on it. Ground the horn's body and apply 12v to the power tab and adjust it, then re-install.

thats wierd... ive got a 2001 xj8 ive always clicked the fob once and it beeped and locked........ i just have to click the unlock 2x's to unlock all the doors....

something different in the US computer? Dunno, in the UK you click it once to open and twice to lock and deadlock.

Not had a chance to look at the horn yet, it locks so it is not a major priority. Maybe I will mention it to the garage next time it gets serviced.

It is just starting to enter 60,000 miles as well, so the dodgy time for the gearbox! Last week, I was on the motorway, right next to Heathrow Airport, 6 lanes of motorway, and the car went clunk, engine turned off but everything else was working, air con, radio, speedo, everything was still on, just the engine switched off!

Was eventually able to cross 6 lanes of traffic moving at over 70mph whilst slowing down and got into the hard shoulder. Put the car back into park, started the engine, started fine and then has behaved flawlessly for the rest of the 200 mile journey and since then! Very odd.

Is the car actually deadlocking, i.e. can you hear the lock actuators when pressing the remote button a second time. If not, check that ALL the door buttons are going fully down. I had this problem with my 2001MY 3.2 and it was due to the drivers door not fully locking on the first press of the remote. It happened several times, seems it was down to a bent lock rod (goes from the latch to the chrome door button), replaced this and fixed the problem.
