Default 2001 Jaguar XJ8 Sedan, reliability?

I am a student looking for a vehicle to buy. Discovered a 2001 XJ8 for 2/3 my budget. It has 140 000km (87 000miles) on it, I was wondering if this car pushing 14 years old is a good purchase for someone not overly familiar with vehicles.

Hi braydenhy,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! The 2001 XJ8 you are considering is a Jaguar factory code X308, so I've deleted the duplicate question you posted in the X350 forum. You'll get the most knowledgeable replies in this forum from owners of similar cars.

Please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum and post an introduction to tell us a little more about yourself.

Enjoy the forum!

Cheers,

Don

The short answer to your question is a simple "No," but there is more to it than that.

You are considering buying a 14 year old, high end, luxury car that was expensive to buy when new and expensive to repair now, especially if you can't do the work yourself and have to pay an independent mechanic, or worse yet, the dealer.

Properly maintained, they are great cars. But be prepared for expensive parts and repairs, if the need should arise.

No 14 year old car is a good choice for a starving student.

Any high-end semi-exotic car will cost more to insure, repair and operate than an econobox.

I see tears and no beers in your future if you buy it.
