2001 Jaguar XJ8 VDP shifter replacement

My 2001 XJ8 VDP will not shift manually into the lower gears. I see one on ebay for 200.00 and wonder how easy is it to replace or what I should check before I spend the $$. Any advise is always appreciated.

Check the cable first, it could possibly be worn and the ball may be sticking in the socket due to rust.
