Here is the JTIS diagram of the engine contol sensors

Here is a JTIS illustration that shows the location of all of the engine control sensors including the crankshaft position sensor. It has the reference of #3 in the table assocated with its location on the diagram illustration (its placement on the engine). It looks like it is at the rear end of the engine block.

Best way to view entire image when the PDF opens is full screen mode. Click on the menu - Window then Full Screen Mode. Use the escape key (Esc) to return to the normal screen mode.
This diagram is the same one for 1998 thru 2003 XJ model range (except the knock sensors shown are for the AJ26 engine).
Here is the knock sensor diagram for the AJ27 engine:

Note the difference between the knock sensors - AJ26 engine has the wire coming out the top of the sensor wire connector (looks like a nut), the AJ27 engine has the wire going into the donut type of connector (that mounts on a stud, then it tightened down with a nut).
