Welcome to the forum. It requires a hydraulic press, removal of the locking ring with a large breaker bar and extension. I have seen quotes of $300 and more.

Gives a little insight, I just did it not too long ago. If you have tools and a press, you can do it yourself with some elbow grease and minimal investment. However, factor that time in with the rest, and it might be worth a trip to a shop if they can do it for under $300. A lot will depend on if it's a place that's familiar with the XJ8 procedure and have the correct tools and process though. I've heard of places give outrageous quotes, claiming they need a $300 tool just by itself (which isn't even close, but that's shops for ya).

thank you all, but am seeing more problem in the car...sighhh! now the power steering is leaking. I tried to use those leak fluid that was suggested on some thread here, but unsuccessful, after using 2 bottles each - leak fluid and power steering fluid, lucas brand. I am afraid the whole steering rack needs to be replaced and its going to cost me a lot.

It's not usually difficult to identify the source of a power steering fluid leak. The most common leak point is probably the low pressure hose that runs from the fluid reservoir to the pump, which is not too expensive or difficult to replace. The seals in the pump are known to fail (they did on our 2003). The seals in the steering rack can fail, and it's usually easy to see fluid leaking from one of the tie rod end boots or the pinion shaft where the steering column connects. Occasionally I'll find that the fitting on one of the high-pressure pipes on a steering rack is leaking, but that's less common than the previously mentioned issues.
After adding 2 bottles of Lucas Stop Leak without curing the leak, it's obvious that your leak is serious enough to require a proper repair.
Also, please visit the https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...-intro-must-5/ and post a required introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jaguar and give you a proper welcome.
Cheers,
Don
