2001 XJ8 VDP coolant issue
First major issue I have had with this car and perhaps not an issue at all. I recently noticed the cooling fans coming on more often. The car has started to run hot. I have checked the coolant..it is topped of fine..did have the coolant low reminder come on prior to topping off. I drive about 15 minutes and then the fan kicks on...drive longer and notice the temp going higher...when I park the car...fan comes on about 5 minutes...where would one begin this prognosis...Thanks in advance for your time. Replace the thermostat, and if the low light warning comes on again and the coolant is in fact low, spend alot of time looking for leaks. There are many possible sources for leaks, none are particularly common...but now that you know the system is full, that has no bearing on the engine temp. The thermostat does.

I haven't done it myself, but lots of others have. I don't recall seeing any step-by-step instructions posted in either the XJ, XK or Stype sections.
If you don't have one yet, either buy yourself a JTIS CD (via ebay for $6), or download one and install it on your PC. Works great for about 90% of DIY projects we undertake. Thermostat couldn't be that difficult.

the thermostat is a very very easy replacement. yes i know, it's unusual for Jaguar.
top front center of the motor is the radiator fill edifice and the home of the thermostat. it's black and in between the valve covers, kinda hard to miss. on the top it has a rubber cap with an allen wrench fitting (you can get it off with a wrench). also, two hoses connect to it. you're concerned with the bottom hose.
behind the bottom hose is a triangular fitting held together by 3 10mm or 8mm bolts. the thermostat is in that triangular fitting housing. procedure, the simplified version -
1) locate the housing for the thermostat
2) remove the bottom hose (fluid will drain out if the level is normal, so drain a little or make a mess. up to you)
3) remove the bolts holding the housing together
4) remove thermostat and take note of which side faces what direction
5) put in new thermostat with same sides facing the same way the one you took out did.
6) put everything back together.
there is a rubber gasket in the thermostat housing but i didn't need to change out when i did mine.
