2001 XJ8 whine sound when accelerating.
Hi,
I'm hearing a whining sound during and slightly after I accelerate in drive. The sound still happens regardless if I am in sport mode or not. It also happens when if I use the "manual" shifting. It appears to be more pronounced in lower gears, but I could just not be hearing it in the higher ones. It does not happen if I just rev the engine in park or in neutral.
I've owned the car for 3 years now, and it's been making this sound consistently for the last week or so. I had the oil/brakes changed about a month ago, and they said all the other fluids were fine.
Please let me know if you recognize this sound! Thank you in advance!
Rudy

Something to check. A buddy of mine gave my daughter a '93 BMW 325 a few years back. It had a whine that sounded like a turbo spinning up, really noticeable in low gears. The culprit was a worn bearing in the pulley. The original design for the tensioner used a spring loaded tension pulley that BMW said caused the bearing to go early, but also maintained tension and put the pulley wheel off center when the bearing went. Not sure what is used in the Jag but if the pitch of the whine seems to follow RPM that's what I'd be looking at.

Thanks for the reply. The sound does not happen when the car is in park or neutral and I rev the engine with the hood up. Does that mean it could be something else? Also, if it is one of the bearings, is it something I could replace in my garage or would I need to take it to a shop? Thanks again!

If you remove the belt to check, just remember that is what drives your water pump. The car WILL overheat after a few miles.
The idler and tensioner pulleys aren't hard to replace. If they have over 50,000 miles
on them, it does not hurt to change them as a preventive measure. I could not really tell from the sound. A mechanics stethoscope helps locate problems. Lisle 52500 is available at many auto stores. Under $20.
You will need a tool to remove the serpentine belt. KD makes a good one KDT3414.
Sears has them.
Take pictures BEFORE you remove the belt.

same sound
Hi, I found this video on YouTube and commented on there before finding this thread. This is identical to the noise I'm getting from my car over the last few weeks. It started after I had some work done on a transmission cooling hose. The garage assure me that its a partially blocked gearbox filter which needs replacing which kind of makes sense after losing some fluid with the hose problem.
Have you had this fixed yet? I'd be keen to find out whether they are right before shelling out the cash.
Thanks
Jim

Gentlemen -
For what its worth - Check your alternators. They will start to whine just before they go out. This happened to me last week. I heard the whine and assumed it was the blower bearings starting to make noise (high mileage engine). The car ran normally, so I was next thinking about a supercharger rebuild. After a day of this the ABS light came on, then the radio shut off, and then I was stopped in the middle of the street. There were no other indicators - no idiot light or check engine light or anything.
Checking the alternator is easy to do if you have a voltmeter. Just start the engine and check between the + and - battery terminals. You should see about 14VDC assuming your battery is in good shape.

That's great, exactly what I thought it was. Thanks so much for the feedback.

Hello;
Is this sound like a "low, droning" sound?
It only happens when the car is moving?
This is classic sounds of wheel bearings.
I had EXACTLY the same low droning sound in mine. Replaced the passenger side rear wheel bearing and it was gone. Now i'm going to do the drivers side.
Pulled out the Wheel hub carrier and brought it to my machine shop @ 6pm saturday night. At 11am sunday morning he called and told me to come pick up the carrier. They pressed out the old bearings and pressed in new one's. This job took about 2 hours from start to finish to tear down and rebuild, not including the time it took to press the bearings into the carrier obviously.
Based on how you describe this, it is in the suspension of the car, not the engine compartment.
