Question 2002 Jaguar XJR high temperature

Hi everybody!

I've purchased my Jag a year ago and had no problem with it until last week. It was very hot here in Montreal (+35 C, high humidity), not much traffic and i was driving with the A/C on when i noticed that the temp went up. Once it reached the red zone i stoppped the engine and in a minute i turned the key. To my surprise the gauge needle pointed at N (i guess it's impossible, correct me if i'm wrong).

Then i tested the car on a highway, the temp was at N until i came back to the city and it went up at the moment i stopped in traffic.

I went to the dealer to have the car inspected but they couldn't reproduce the problem (probably because that day wasn't hot enough). I was told that there were no error codes, the fan worked perfectly, coolant level was ok and all they could try to do was to change thermostat (i agreed). That was yesterday.. Today i did some 20km and then stuck in the traffic, the temp jumped one point above N and then started jerking.

Can anyone help me with the information what can be a possible source of such problem?

Thank you in advance!

Also, there are two radiator fans but i've noticed that only the lowest one is working not depending on whether A/C is on or off. Maybe this is my problem? Could anyone describe how those two fans should work theoretically?

i believe the fans have two speeds and are on when the car is at slow speeds...and when the car gets too hot...i am guessing one of the speeds may not be working or one of your fans are out...also if they aren't working right it will screw with your AC...i just had both mine replaced for $500...they can only replace both as they are a unit...good luck

You are correct, Jaguar sells the fans as a pair with the shroud--crazy expensive. I sell them individually for $197.50 plus a $100 core. You get the core money back once we receive your old fan and motor.

It really sounds like a fan problem. It seems that it's not moving air in stand still traffic.

Thanks to all!

h20boy, i don't know whether it's original, can i check it myself without taking the car to pieces?

As for the fans, i had them checked yesterday and it seems that they both work properly.

ken, thanks for the info! Britishparts is my favorite store since i ordered there my R performance brake rotors and pads this year and the price was more than twice less than at Canadian dealers

I know this can be frustrating but this was happening to me, I had to get my thermostat changed and also my motor fans replaced....sometime the thermostat sticks.....Jags are very sensitive

Turn the ac on and both fans are supposed to go to low. If ones not working check both 30 amp fuses in the engine compartment fuse box drivers side. Otherwise replace that motor and if one fuse is blown, assume the motor is bad and blowing the fuse too
