2002 XJ exec
Hi everyone, I'm new to this particular forum - I just bought a 2002 exec and I have a few naggling issues. Does anyone have any insights?
1) The steering column groans at times. It is intermittent but when it comes - it's freakishly annoying. I thought it might be power steering fluid related, but not sure [:@]
2) Do you have to hit the unlock button on your key fob twice before locking it? If I simply lock it after getting out of the car, the drivers door stays unlocked. I have to manually unlock again from the fob in order to lock it. Strange. Seems counterintuitive.
3) How do I remove the door cards on my doors? I am changing the plastic bits around the switches with wooden ones and although I'm usually quite handy with these sorts of things, I have no idea how to get them off in this case...
Any help would be appreciated!!
Best,
Jeehova

Welcome mate! What's a door card though? As for the fob, it takes one click to lock all doors but the panic to remain off. The second click activates the panic which goes off if the doors open, or if the car no longer stays level to the floor! Example, my car was getting towed away a few months ago, and the panic went off and saved me 100 bucks!

Thanks bigdreams05 -
It's so strange about the fob, because one click really doesn't lock all of my doors - it locks all but the drivers door (the tab even stays up). In order to lock the drivers door, I have to hit unlock, THEN lock. Bizarre. Maybe it's just my car? Should probably take it to the dealer to see if it's a unique issue. Only thing is that it's like this EVERY time and not intermittent... hmmm.
Ah, sorry, in the UK thedoor card is the door panel on the interior... the non-metal bits. Do you know if I have to remove these to change the wood trim around the switches (not the opening handle wood).
Thanks for the help!
Cheers

Big how'd the panic get you outta getting towed? The only way I got out of getting towed was giving Jose, the tow truck guy, 50 bucks. it was a 180 dollar fine tho, so it was worth the 50 bucks. I pulled into a gas station, told some guy working there I was gunna fill up after getting money at the bank, then walked over to the pizzaria for a couple of slices. Won't ever try that one again.

The door lock actuator on the driver's door may be hanging up. I have anintermittent issue with mine not locking. I forget to check that the lock button went down when I leave the car. Then, when I come back I notice that it's up and open the door. It starts beeping and then the alarm goes off. [:@] I have heard that dribbling some silicone lubricant down the lock button/tab/chrome thingy will help. Since my car is under warranty, it's on the "to do" list next time it's in for service.

Thanks FL
Seems very similar to my problem... but when I "come back and notice it's up and open the door"... nothing happens. It just opens. No beeping or screaming... nothing. Maybe my alarm isn't working either?!!! I was so chuffed that I was able to find a 2002 with only 19,000 miles but it's these little things, I guess... then again, when I bought my disco NEW, I had 23 problems by the end of day 7 (which I wrote down and took to the dealership - they fixed free of charge) .

I hope it's not such a big issue, yeah...
Heh, funny - no, the car hasn't "done a round"... although with these digital odos can the jag meter display seven digits?!! I guess we should pose the logical question:
HAS ANYONE CROSSED THE MAGIC MILLION MARK IN THEIR DIGITAL ODO XJ8???

If you drove 6 hours a day evrey day for a year at an AVERAGE speed of 55 miles per hour, you would still only have 120,000 miles a year, and that excludes breakdowns or anything, and u know there would be one with that much driving. So I garantee you no XJ8 has rolled over 1,000,000
