2002 XJ8 cranks wont start no codes
Car has been running fine. Yesterday tried to start it, and it would crank fine, then gave me an Failsafe Engine Mode indicator. Tonight i tried again and only got an ATC Not Avail, cranks fine, seems to try to take for a split second but doesn't. Checked the codes but it hasn't thrown any. Any ideas?

Fuel is the most likely issue as there is not a direct link between low fuel pressure from any reason and a CEL. Spark usually sets something.
Measure the fuel pressure at the right rear of fuel rail Schrader valve. Fuse, fuel pump relay, failing (failed) fuel pump, failed fuel pump wiring harness, restricted fuel filter.
We had a rash of failed fuel pumps last Spring that I assumed were because of Winter storage. There has been several similar problems in the last couple weeks.
And welcome to the forum by the way!

Fuel Pump Replacement...If you try it
I just finished replacing my fuel pump about an hour ago. As stated, lots of good info in the archives. I chose to remove the fuel tank as opposed to cutting a large hole in the rear shelf next to the subwoofer to extract the pump as some suggest. The challenge in the job is accessing and managing the two fuel lines on the bottom of the tank. Since they are so difficult to get to from under the car, I cut a 4-3/4" hole in the panel behind the back seat (see photo.) That way as I worked the tank rearward, I tilted it back so I could get to the lines. You don't need to completely remove the tank - just enough to get to the access port in the top. BTW, not an easy job overall, lots of opportunity to damage wires, fuel lines etc. I'd give it a 7 out of 10 difficulty factor for a weekend mechanic. Took me 3 evenings - but then I don't get in a hurry.
Good Luck!

Gary,
Welcome to the forum. I grew up in Columbus. It should go without saying, but, save the pump for last on your list of things to look into. You shoud be able to hear the pump kick on from the trunk. I had similar problem(99xj8), filter was more than likely my problem. You can find the filter almost anywhere. Make sure you get the two o-rings needed for filter replacement. Jaguar Dealer has them for $4 a piece, or some guys here have matched with ones at a decent parts store(NAPA). You'll need some stubby wrenches too.
Good luck.
