Angry 2003 engine in 2004?

My "dear son" wrapped my 2003 jaguar xj8 around a tree totalling it. The only saving grace is that the engine is fine. I was looking at buying a "salvaged" 2004 XJ8 with a non working engine. The body and interior of the desire car, however, are immaculate. I don't suppose with the difference in body styles, there is any chance that my old 2003 engine can be easily installed in a 2004 XJ8, is there? My future happiness (and my son's future) depend on your answer. No pressure though.

Personally I would have thought that 'the only saving grace' was that your son is fine!

Please read the forum headers and post in the appropriate sections.

It IS possible to fit a 2003 AJ27 XJ engine into a 2004 X350 but it''s not easy at all. The AJ27 would have to be fitted with the oil pan, the anciliaries and other 'hang ons' from the later AJ33 engine. The intake manifold ideally should stay from the later engine but this doesnt fit directly onto the AJ27 and would have to be adapted. I haven't even started talking about the engine management and gearbox: If you keep the 2004 gearbox you will have to have the later 32 bit engine management to talk to the TCM but the ECU ignition, and fueling values are NOT suited to the earlier engine so these would have to be modified...

I think Ive barely just scratched the surface

Well, thank you. I think my question has been answered. It seems that while it may be possible, it certainly isn't advisable and I suspect would create many future problems. As for my son, this is the second time he has wrecked my Jag, but the first time that he's totalled it. Apparently, he is "unbreakable." Unfortunately the Jag wasn't.

Small note, I actually think it will not be possible to use the 4.0, as the 4.0 heads do not have enough material to tap 3 extra bolt holes to make the bigger 4.2 intake manifold to fit. Swapping heads to overcome that would mean other issues (increase compression), and then it will be cheaper to find a 2nd hand 4.2 engine.
