2003 xj8 steering rack shim
Hello everyone I’m replacing all ball joints and bushings on 2003 xj8 base and when I pulled the steering rack back to remove the lower control arm bolt a shim ( looks like rubber) fell out and now I’m putting everything back together and can’t figure out where it’s going so I looked the shop manual but the diagram is not clear of the exact spot and I don’t know if there is another one on the other side I didn’t see one please advise. Thank you much

That was actually my suspicion as well, when I saw that part (....road debris...), but I wasn't sure enough to write it.
If a dead rat falls out, there is also no need to put it back in the engine compartment or suspension exactly where it was...
(I once had one hanging in the suspension...)
But while I was double checking all kinds of parts, incl. engine mounts of the X-Type, where rubber could have detached from, I cam across this one:
Your bit of rubber (or similar) would NOT have come from this part, but while you are replacing parts on your Jag, better make sure that yours is still OK. I had to replace mine, as the rubber bits in the bigger end where broken thru, all of them, and there was way too much movement (roll) possible. You find this part in the middle under your car. There are different replacement "versions", which feature a different "strength" of rubber. I went for the equivalent Ford part, as it was way cheaper.

Yes, I went thru a "finding process" myself to identify this part:

Do you have a picture of what that wedge should look like? Maybe you have only a broken-off piece of that wedge only?
You know, it's possible that you do not recognize the wedge, because it is broken... - just as in the following joke:
Someone passed a farm and accidentally drove over a chook (Austr. for: chicken). He picked up the chook, drove to the farmer, showed him the chook and apologized. The farmer said: "It's not one of mine: My chooks aren't that flat!"
