Default 2003 XJ9 Rear Door Locking problem

My rear door driver side will not open, it is locked! One can pull up the door lock plunger, but it will pull back down. We have tried to remove the door panel, but it needs to pull it to the left from the inside to get it off! Removing the door hindge will not help!

Can anyone help with this please?

Can you open it with someone holding it up inside and someone opening the door handle either inside or out? If not, you may want to figure out which fuse or relay handles the door lock mechanism and pull it. Other option would be to disconnect the battery but you'll loose some of your presets doing this.

No, the locking plunger pulls itself back down in the lock position when you let it go. The inside handle has no effect, although you can feel the connection between the handle and the locking plunger when you move the handle. I have disconnected the battery, no help.

Do you really have an XJ9? Please take a photo of your 9-cylinder engine

Mine was sticking intermittently also. I asked my indie to check it out while he had the car for some other service. He said parts of the mechanism were corroding, so he cleaned and lubricated it. No problems since then. It wasn't sticking nearly all the time, but I didn't want to end up in the situation described above, where you can't open the door at all.

Doubt this helps the OP, but to anyone else who has the beginnings of this problem, get it fixed before it becomes permanent.

Thanks all. First to VDPNYC--It is an XJ8. Second, same problem had dealer look at it and my friends Jag mechanic in UK diagnosed the problem and tried to replicate and repair but all to no avail. I have been advised that only option I have is to cut door panel! Thanks for all of your help.

I doubt that you'll have to cut the doorpanel.
I just had a look at the rear door on my XJ8 and with the rear seat removed it should be possible to remove the panel even with a closed door!
I would give it a try!

Good luck!

DavidN,

Thanks for the reply. I did remove the back seat, and tried to remove the door panel. Unfortunately, in order to remove the door panel, I need to slide it towards the back of the car which I cannot do since the door is closed! I tried the right door panel and found this to be true. Bottom line, I cannot get the door panel off unless I can slide it back. I cannot slide it back because the door is closed.

just an update to this thread...

we could not unlock the passenger rear door.. not even with lifting the lock manually.

The origional poster was asking about removing the panel while the door is closed.

I just took my car to a body shop today and they were able to get the panel off with the door closed..

once they opened the door, the door lock now works fine...

SOOOOOOO.. the question now is do you think i need to still replace the actuator, and if so, I read somewhere about some ford part that is MUCHO cheaper than the jag one (Although the same part)....

any input on where to get a new one?

My previous car had a similar problem, the incompetent dealership replaced parts "bumbilingly" and after a few tries it was finally was fixed.

During the tornado in NY last year the window got smashed in that door and after replacing it the problem came back, only the window repair guy was much more savvy - just banged quite hard on the outside of the door where the lock is a few times with the side of his fist and the problem was fixed and never returned

$120 was the best price on parts from the sponsors.. if i have to go that route, i will, but i read about some that were $20ish new... a ford part.
