98 XJ VDP red security light on how do I reset
I have removed battery cables and touched them together as per some advice on other threads. The car will not start at all. I have left the cables off over night and charged the battery to be sure it is good. I replaced the 2-2016 batteries in the fob and it does not work anymore, I tried to reprogram it bit I don't think it will reprogram with the security light on the shifter plate, not sure??? Couldn't get it to work, it worked before?? The electrical problem started a while back, driver window would not work, left rear would go down from driver button but not up, had to reach back and use the button back there or hold key in door lock position. Started driving one night and no headlights, and where the ABS and Stability Control Failure warning lights come on, one came on that said HOOD OPEN, I opened and closed the hood and wiggled the wiring I could see and the lights began to work and it was fine for a couple weeks. Then it was parked for four days during texas ice storm in the garage, and was dead. All doors were unlocked but trunk was not, and that's when the security light came on and shut it all down, when I open a door the red lights at lower part of door come on but no dome lights or anything. Any suggestions to clear and reset the Security Light and get fob and car to work again???

I found a guy to help me on JustAnswer.com I unplugged the Security Module behind the glove box, and blew off the connections, plugged it back in, checked fuse #5 and #7 in fuse box below rear seat on driver side and the car came back to life. No towing to dealer this time, YAYYYY! The crazy warning saying HOOD OPEN went away too! Trunk back to working normal. The only problem still having is with windows. I'll report back the fix when I get done.

The windows faults are sometimes caused by false messages on the SCP network and a 'HARD RESET' can get the driver's door switchpack operating normally again.
I learned this when the X308 was introduced and I had a car in for a switcpack fault. The right rear window would operate from the left front (driver's window) switch.
I replaced the switchpack without disconnecting the battery and NOTHING CHANGED.
I did a 'HARD RESET' and the windows operated normally. I installed the original 'faulty switchpack' and it also operated normally.
I learned alot about networks since the 1990s.
I hope the BPM is OK and keeps working the way it's supposed to. Maybe it was just a faulty connection and 'exercising the connections' got it going again.

Yeah, I hope it continues to work. I am leery of more Hard Resets for fear of losing what progress I've had. I did remove the driver door panel and exercised the connectors. I did this with battery still connected but key off, hope this was ok. When I connected every thing back the problem changed, right rear button was controlling driver window, no others worked. How do you do the HARD RESET???
