98 XJ8 Engine ticking.
Hello everyone!
I need some help. I have a '98 XJ8 with 72,000 miles on it. I just recently replaced the timing chains and tensioners on it due to a snapped secondary timing chain. Upon removal of the head for inspection I found that two of the valves had been bent. I replaced these two valves and lapped them. I then reinstalled everything. Checked timing about 8-10 times. When it started up there was a slight misfire at idle and a rather loud ticking from the engine. All of the noise is coming from the head that had the damaged valves. The valve clearence has been checked, adjusted and rechecke. A compression and leakdown test has also been performed with acceptable results. coils have been checked and spark plugs have been replaced. Can anyone help me figure out what this noise and slight miss is? It only misses at idle and does not miss once it is brought off idle, say 1500-2000 RPM. I've run out of ideas and can only think that maybe there are other valves not seating correctly?? I want to make sure there is nothing left that could cause this before I tear apart the car again. Thanks for any help you can provide.
Rich.

RE: 98 XJ8 Engine ticking.
We have seen a few of these engines develop piston slap because of the short skirt. The engine checked out fine with compression, etc. The noise just became louder and louder.
Pray to the Jaguar gods this is not it. Put on something durid-ish and walk sunwise around the Jaguar while chanting "God save the Queen." Doubt it will help, but it can't hurt.
