98 xj8 won't start
I drive my car everyday and haven't had any problems with it all. I was leaving the bank yesterday and it wouldn't start. I guessed it just needed a little boost so pulled out my cables and jumped it. It started right up. As I'm leaving the bank it it shuts off again. I noticed that the car stuttered when I pressed the gas pedal. Now I'm thinking that I ran out of gas. Luckily I wasn't too far from my friends house and he brought me some gas. I think it was a 5 gallon can and we filled it up. Came back and put the gas in the car. It would not start back up. It's cranking but not turning over. I don't know what else it could be??? I know this site has a lot of experienced jag mechanics/techs..... Any ideas would greatly appreciated

Almost guarantee the fuel pump is bad.If you can locate the fuel rail under the plastic engine covers, you will find what is called a schrader valve, looks just like a tire valve. With the key on,depress the pin, holding a rag under it to catch fuel, if you are lucky. If no fuel spurts out, either the filter is clogged or the pump is bad.

Thanks for the response RJ237. When I turn the key to the on position I hear a click from fuse box under my backseat. Not sure what that is??? I did what said and nothing came out of the valve. Going to check my fuel filter later today. Was wondering if a dirty air filter would prevent the car from stopping

That's one side you can let go leaving the filter attached, if you've skinny arms or know some wirey youth that can shove the release clips home then disconnecting them isn't tough. There's also a picture of a tool Avos made from heating pipe with a slot cut in the top, shamfered edge and could be pushed home with the car on the ramp making this an easy painless way. I'll try and find the picture as fuel pumps quitting is now all the rage.

I have used the DENSO replacement pumps but the rubber mounts in the metal bracket need to be 'modified/cut' to fit the replacement pump. (sharp knife)
The URO brand is a DIRECT size fit with the same electrical connector but I don't know if it is the same quality as the DENSO. I have installed the URO when customers bring their own parts. So far no one has returned with a failed pump.
Most times you need to purchase a filter 'sock' or the pump warranty will be void.
