98 xj8 won't start
I bought this at auction but it seems to be fairly well maintained, how ever when i got the car it turned over but wouldn't start. I found the fuel pump frozen up & replaced it then when I jumpered the relay I had an injector with a bad lower oring and replaced it. now I have spark and fuel but no start very hot battery. any help or advice would be very appreciated

Where can I get error code definitions ?

Hi
Here is a JPEG file of the 1998 XJ Electronic Engine Controls lists and shows each of 6 sensors (diagram with sensor image/location) in engine compartment (Look at listed item 3 - Crankshaft Position Sensor and item 6 - Camshaft Position Sensor):

Hi Roy
Sorry that I could not be more help, since our 2001 XJ8 has AJ27 engine and it is not the same as your 1998 XJ8 AJ26 engine.
I also found this diagram showing the Engine Harness connector on AJ26 engine.
Looks like the camshaft position sensor is bolted somewhere on or near the black pot that is attached to the Throttle Body.
See item listed as #15 (P1015 is the electrical wiring connector end of the camshaft position sensor).
I circled the whole length of the camshaft position sensor (from plug connector end to the bolt on end) in red on the diagram.
The crankshaft position sensor is not on this diagram.
Here is another JPEG taken from the JTIS21 Shop Repair Manual software (LH Cylinder Head R&I - step 12 shows crankshaft position sensor location & removal instructions):
Here is a JPEG file showing Photos of both of sensors (Ebay photos of Aftermarket parts):
The Crankshaft Position Sensor - Dealership Retail price is $81.50 Discounted to $66.21 plus shipping, Aftermarket (Ebay $60.15 free shipping)
Camshaft Position Sensor - Dealership Retail $162.50 Discounted to $132.03 plus shipping, Aftermarket (Ebay $73.38 free shipping)

thanks jim
I had to say thanks, this last jpeg with the sensor position was extremely helpful as I do have a 4 post lift It shouldn't be to hard. the engine does start and run (if you give a little throttle) for about 20 secs then dies not like you turn the key off but more like you run out of gas but i believe I still have good rail pressure. I am thinking like the computer is shutting the injector fire off. it acts the same way if i jumper the fuel relay.
