98 XJR clunks when downshifting

As you approach a stop sign, my XJR clunks as it slows down, especially if the Sport setting is on and as it shifts down into first.
The clunking sounds like it's coming from the rear right side. I would like to suspect that it's a worn u-joint, since it's simple and would be a logical wear item. The car has ~105k miles.
Thoughts about what the most common causes/fixes are?
Thanks,
Brian

mine also does this...86K on my 02 R. Sounds like the spider gears in the diff to me and kinda like my MGB which could be taken up with thrust washers...but that's an easy diff to get into...the Jag diff would have to be dropped and stripped. Not irritating enough for me to bother with....yet! If it starts whining...it's coming off. I did change the oil recently...needed it. Might consider putting thicker weight oil in it down the line.

My 2000 VDP S/C with 75K miles does this too--it's more of a dull "pop" sound than a clunk. It happens as the transmission downshifts into first coming to a stop, and then on initial acceleration from rest. The sound can be duplicated by keeping the brakes applied and applying throttle alternately in drive and reverse.
My tech told me it was the differential, which would be a very pricey parts swap since few shops will actually work on them. I'll just live with the popping and keep my $3000.![Smile](https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I found this mp3 that sounds exactly like my issue:

My 98 xjr also does this, but if you haul *** all the time and dont stop you wont have to worry about it, haha. I dont think it hurts the jaguar at all because mine has been doing it since 50K and it now has 75k. One way you could solve it is to put a louder exhaust on or put in a loud stereo. Having the clunk sound everyonce in awhile is not worth worrying about.
