'99 XJ8-L ran rough then quit.
Can anyone help? Yesterday, while on the interstate, all was great and then my '99 XJ8-L 4.0 began to run rough. Within 5 miles it quit completely. It restarted for 30 secs. then quit. It restarted for 10 sec. then quit again. It restarted and ran rough for 5 sec. then quit. Now it won't start at all. Check engine lite came on. Trouble code said "Random misfire." Cleared codes. Now it won't start at all. It has new plugs, air filter. Don't see any vacuum leaks. No oil in the plug wells. Only code is P1000. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My '98 XJ8 did the same thing a couple months ago and it turned out that one of the two timing chains broke. Unfortunately it also fractured the cam however, didn't bend the valves. Anyway, I hope that's not your problem but the symptoms you've outlined are similar to those my Big Cat experienced. BTW; it cost me $2,800 to get my cat purrin' again! Best of luck.
