99 XJ8 Rearview Mirror

The liquid crystal leaks inside -- I believe the heat does them in. Its unfortunately a common failure with dimming mirrors - and an expensive one.
For a while some got replacements when they called the manufacturer direct - but I believe that ended years ago. If you do a Google search I think you will find a lot of information.
No fix that I know of -- on other cars many get an aftermarket. I know of one person who had this happen on an outside mirror and was able to separate the two layers and remove the outside clear glass and clean off the LC layer and reuse the mirror (no dimming now obviously) don't know if this is possible with the design of the Jaguar inside

As an aside, I would NOT use the block-o-wood approach to remove/reattach the mirror from the windscreen but use small pocket screwdrivers to lever the mirror on/off throught the slots in the mount base. I have replaced dozens and I broke a mount from the windscreen trying to 'POP' the mirror onto the mount resulting in the replacement of the windscreen so I am not a proponent of force. Since then I have used leverage. If you put 2 small flat blade screwdrivers in the 2 slots in a VEE you can lever the mirror on and off with LITTLE to NO strain to the glass. The mirror is removed by prying it down and installed by prying it UP. Be careful not to damage the wiring!!!

I do agree with Bob but my approach recently was with a forward and downward force with my hand. http://www.gusglikas.com/AutoRepairMirrorRepair.htm In either case you stand to cause damage to the windshield if you are not careful.
