99 XJ8L 37,000 miles
I just acquired a very low mileage 99 XJ8L. Have read many threads about nikosil liner issues and timing chain tensioners. Car has approx 38,000 miles and runs fine . Only issues prior was replacement of thermostat on 2 occaisions. I have 2 questions that hopefully forum members will give some good advise.
1. Would you replace all the tensioners and timing chains as "preventative medicine"?? and how much should I expect to pay .
2. Was the cylinder lining issue caused only by using high sulfur content fuel (lower grade gasoline) or is this problem something that for sure will occur due to bad engineering no matter what the mileage of the car?
My annual driving mileage for the car will be only be about 4000 - 5000 miles per year. (It is a 3rd vehicle)
Thanks in advance for any insight into these potential problems and expenses.
