99 xjr engne in 01 xj8
Hi everyone in this forum, well i got an 01 xj8... last week driving in freeway i think forced the jag. and as soon as i got the exit i can heard a little engine noise ... when check it , very very low oil level ,whith no light on ...a friend of mine told me that maybe just the oil pump need to be replaced, so i call my mechanic and he told me that we need to take engine out and replace some crank seats and machine the crankshaft ... but now, someone else is offering me an 99 xjr engine , transmission and both computers... well my question is; is it possible , replace 99 xjr eng and tranny in my 01 xj8 ???, any advise will be very grateful... thanks in advance and have happy holidays.

Engine swaps are often discussed and seldom done except for the same year/model. The electronics and other things are too complex to economically make such a change. For instance, the transmission on an XJR is entirely different from a XJ8.
Certainly can be done, may not be worth the money.

Hi test point , thanks for the tip...
It was an idea of mine to do something crazy with this car.... imagine a vanden plas with xjr engine and tranny ???
So does it make a difference that the engine and the transmission come together with their own computers?
Or would you recommend that i repair the original engine?

Nicasil=bad, 97-2000. 01 better block material. I would never do the swap you want, only the other way around 01 into a 98-99
Why do you need crank seals and machine crank? How low was the oil, it holds 8qts, 2qts to get off the dipstick. you would probobly have to be down to only 2 qts left to have issues and then maybe not permanent. Change your oil and see what it does before you start throwing money out the door. Your not gonna do more damage if damage has been done

Hi BRUTAL! Thanks for your help. ok. the mechanic told me something like needing new crank metals and send crankshaft to machine shop.We added 2qts. but nothing changed. The indicator never showed the low oil level. There's a noise like metal against metal like "tak tak tak" it is more noticeable in high rev.A friend of mine told me it could only be the oil pump what do you think? But i still love this Jaguar and i have to do something.Thank you so much for all your valuable advice. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Where is the noise, up high or low in the engine? you could have wiped out the upper chain tensioners, cam/valve bucket/s galled and sticking from lack of oil, piston pin knock, rod/main bearing knock. pretty hard to diag noise without being there. I would pull the cam covers(easy) and inspect the upper tensioners, as well as drop the oil pan (easy) to inspect the pickup and pan for wayward metal, plastic etc and then see what you have and go from there
