Default 99 XJR - Questions/Help

Hello,

I have 99 XJR and have couple problems. I tried to start and it wont start. When i turn the key it shows everything fine including battery but there will be a click and nothing else. Starter doesn't make cranking noise. I talk to a mechanic in different state and he told me that I need to locate a post and it might be burnt. Need your help with this, if someone has pics or know how to get to post or give me some direction it will be great. Other problem is front left caliper is stuck any input on that will be appreciated. Caliper problem isn't important at this point, I just want it to start.

Thank you guys in advance.

Welcome to the forum! Hope we can help.

If I am interpreting your post correctly when you turn the key to 'start' you get a 'click' and nothing else.

If I have read that right the first thing I would check is the condition of the battery.

Plan A: charge the battery.

Plan B: Have an Auto Parts store check/charge the battery. In the present condition that means taking it out.

Caliper can wait until the engine runs.

Come back with further info.

check the connections on the main fuse link in the trunk where the primary positive cable runs from the battery. I have a had a couple of no starts and it appears that there is something there that can cause an intermittent condition. I have simply tugged on it and then tried again and it fires right up.

Might be time for a new starter. Try tapping on the starter with a small hammer or other tool while someone else tries to start the car; it might start.

i had exacly the same issue with my '99 XJR , try clean the ground lead from battery to chassis.

That worked for me , to be save i bought a new battery and had no starting
problems since.

One other thing to check... I had my metal power steering fluid line touching the alternator grounding it to the battery - so the battery would drain rather quickly. In fact, it ultimately melted a pinhole in the power steering line such that it was leaking (which is how I discovered the problem and solved 2 in one shot)

There is a piece of rubber slipped over the power steering line that keeps the line "spaced" away from the alternator but as I discovered, it can easily move up/down the line allowing it to touch.

Probably not your problem but you never know....

Here's another suggestion - click under the bonnet is good news as power to the front is there. It's possible you've a bad contact under the bonnet - the fuseboxes on the inner wing have a black power cable going to one and another power cable linking the other, these connections are a nut down onto ring terminals, the ring terminals oxidize so cleaning them up could help. if you say the battery is good as in fully charged 12.5V+?

OK. I jump start the car it started. Thanks for all your input but its not the end. When I started the car something was burning, I think it might be oil. It was coming out underneath where is says jaguar in this image, mostly towards right. It stopped after sometime. Car doesn't go over 3500 rpm as ABS, traction, stability lights are on, I think I will have to reset those. I didn't drive car for almost 4 months. Brake caliper is still stuck. Please give me advise on how to release caliper and reset those sensors. If you can or have any video or pics it will be great.

Thank you guys in advance.

At this point you have two choices- Get the car scanned and attack the problem(s), OR start replacing things based on what other's experience says might be wrong. I would do the first. AutoZone will scan your car for free. Same with AutoZone, I think.
