Default 99 xjr secondary tensioner problems

If any one could help i`d be very thankful. Any I didnt know what was wrong with my car, so I got my neighbor who is a toyota mechanic to look at it. He had me order some parts and put then in and that was not it. Then I called samuals jag in Brighton MA USA told him what was going on and he knew right over the phone what it was. THE CAM TENSIONERS sure enough they wre craked. So my buddy put them in and the car ran smoother but it still has that rattling noise and another which sounds like the supercharger which we will deal with later. Right now my question is Is the cam chain supposed to have slack in it ? Right now I have the driver side valve cover off cause I wanted to see what he did.

hmm, it could be the primary tensioners and guides that could do with replacing if you have slack in the chains. If you can get a look down behind the timing cover and check them out.
The supercharger, to confirm if it's rattling, take the belt off and run the engine, or use a long screwdriver and hold it to your ear, or engineers stethoscope and locate the noise while the engine is running. If it's noisey, it'll need bearings and coupler, a rebuild.

The upper chain is not supposed to be loose. When I replaced my secondary (upper) chain tensioners, the chain was pretty tight. No slack at all. The tensioners should take up any slack. If they don't, either the tensioner is not working correctly or the chain is stretched. There is a little pin that has to be pulled on the new tensioners after they are put in place to let them "spring out".

Well, there are 4 lower guides. Laft and right bank, and slack and tension side. So, NO, if any one of the 4 is broken in two, it is not particularly fine.
