You can disconnect the tilt motor connector and measure the resistance but I would just suggest that you remove the motor. The 'tilt' is a lot easier than the 'reach'.
At the top of the XK8/R forum there is a FAQ Sticky that has most of the reoccurring issues with these cars listed in alphabetical order, along with a ton of documentation and reference material. At the top of the 'General Tech Help' there is a Sticky that provides a free down load of the JTIS CD. That is the official Jaguar repair and service manual.
