AC Fresh Air cycle

AC Fresh Air cycle
I can't say for sure if this is a new behavior or if I am just noticing it:
With my AC on in manual mode, if I press the button to recirculate the cabin air it stays on just a short time, maybe 3-5 minutes, and then goes back to "fresh" air. It does not cycle back to recirculate, at least within 10-15 minutes of waiting; can't tell if it ever would.
Does this sound normal or is something wrong? It sucks (no pun intended) in traffic because you are suddenly breathing exhaust and look down to see the light is off and it is pulling in outside air.
What is the controller for this behavior, if it is abnormal, so I can look at fixing it?
Thanks!

Re-circ
Mine does that too. I keep it in auto mode all the time, but when the car has cooled down or I'm in traffic, I'll push the recirc button and a few minutes later look down and it's gone back to fresh air mode. It seems kind of screwy, because when I get in the car and it's been sitting in the sun it will go into high recirc - why the heck it would want to try to cool the hot air in the car and not being in fresh air then - I dunno either. But other than these little quirks it works fine.

Recirc
Wow, that makes sense. These forums learn ya a whole bunch of useful stuff. Another little pearl of wisdom - if you hold down the button for the outside air temp until it beeps it will stay there instead of changing back to the inside thermostat temp display.

That is normal behavior. Once the interior temperture at the sensor is 15 degrees F or less than the set temperture it will automatically go into fresh mode. If you push the recirculate button and let go before it beeps, it will time out in that mode and go back to fresh mode.
The fastest way to cool a car down is in recirculation mode. It only takes a short while to cool down a small confined area vs. trying to constantly cool down outside area at a fairly constant higher temperture. The reason to primarily run in fresh air mode is to control mildew and mold growth in your ducts to prevent the mustiness odor and also to keep the oxygen content higher to prevent that stuffiness feeling especially when you have four heavy breathing passengers.

Or you could read the owner's manual (assuming you have one). An amazing, shocking in fact, amount of information there! 😊
