Advice wanted for 2001 XK8 ZF5HP24 Transmission
Here's what's up with my 2001 XK8:
For a few years I have noticed that when i put the selector in"D", there is sometimes about a half second pause afterwhich things connect and off I go.
Today, I got my first "Transmission Fault". I had to give it a bit more gas because the transmission stated to slip. I did get to my destination and experienced no problems on the way back.
When this all started, I had my Jag mechanic check the ATF level (no stick) and he said it was fine.
So fixing this could cost perhaps a filter and ATF all the way to a rebuild.
Any guesses on what is wrong? Advice? Recommendations?
Thanks!

I'm an absolute novice at this but, all the advice I have seen suggests having a shop put a Transgo or other upgraded main pressure valve in your transmission to replace the existing, weaker original one that leads to troubles with the clutch drums. I had that done on my low mileage '03 VDP as a preventive measure when I bought it last year. Cost me about $900 to have a reputable local transmission shop change fluid, filter and replace the valve.
Again, I don't profess to be any kind of expert but I've read a boatload on the subject and used that info to guide my actions.

The 4.2 L series beginning in 2003 has the 6HP26. All earlier cars had the 5HP24. The transmission definitely has to come out, and whether to rebuild or replace has been discussed for years. Use the search and do some studying. A competent transmission shop or foreign car specialist would be a better choice than the dealer, who may not even want to work on your "old" car.
