Ahh Crap! Won't start... HELP...
Ok, so I have a 2000 XJ8 VP.. When I first bought this car, the airbag light was on and after checking about everything I could, I replaced the clock spring. Bingo! fixed that problem. Well, four months later, my controls for the radio quit. So, I checked out the clock spring and sure enough, It was broken!. So, I again replaced it and this time I studied things and made sure it was wound right and I installed it. Again, all worked great.....Until today. I couldn't get the car to start, then it started...then a few hours later, it wouldn't start, then after waiting for an hour, it started. So, I'm thinking clock spring again. So, I removed it, set it on my bench and tested continuity and it appears fine. So, I'm at a total loss as to what it could be.. ANY BODY?
I'd sure like some help with this...
Thanks

Are you talking about the starter not engaging with the engine or the starter engages but the engine won’t run?
The clock spring won’t have anything to do with either. If the CS is out of the car, the engine will still crank and run.
There’s a multitude of things that would prevent the starter to not engage.
Starter could be bad, dirty/corroded connections on starter, battery and grounds. Check those first. Reinstall the CS and maybe double check the connectors at the bottom of the steering column.

The starter cranks fine. But thats all that happens. I've changed out all the five pin relays and checked all the fuses. On my 87 Corvette, I found the car had a security deal on it that if it would set, I would have to wait 3 minutes and then it would start right up. I found a wire that controlled that, cut it and put in a small resister that matched the one built in the key. After that, it always started. I am wondering if Jag did anything like that. I'm getting fuel, it turns over, it just won't run. There's got to be something in the ignition that trips and won't allow it to run. But I'll be darned if I can figure it out.
Thanks very much for any ideas or help..

This could mean just too low battery voltage. Still enough charge to crank the engine but not enough for the electronics. Have the battery fully charged and try starting the car then.

Ok, the car will start fine most of the time and sometimes it just won't. My son put his reader on it yesterday and we pulled up these fauts:
(1)Trans. control modual. control modual malfunction
(2)ABS System
(3)Instrument pack
(4)Engine control modual.
It was running when we tested it. He then erased all the above but I'm afraid this will happen again. I think there must be a faulty connection or a faulty switch. I'd fix it if I had a clue what it could be. I've cleaned and tightened all the grounds around the fuse boxes. Other than that, I don't know what to look for.
Any ideas?

Ok, heres what I have...
ABS U2500 CAN BUS
ECM P1260 SECURITY INPUT
ECM P1111 SYSTEM CHECK COMPLETE SINCE LAST MEMORY CLEAR
IPK INSTRUMENT B1238 OVER TEMP
TCM P1797 CAN TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE TO ENGINE CONTROL MODULE MALFUNCTION
CONTROL
MODULE
My son's reader saved them. The car has started fine since it was all cleared but I know this won't always be...
ABS ANTILOCK ...U2500 ...CAN BUS ERROR
ECM...P1111 ...SYSTEM CHECK COMPLETE SINCE LAST MEMORY CLEAR
ECM.... P1260 ... SECURITY INPUT
IPK INSTRUMENT PACK ...B1238 ...OVER TEMP
TCM TRANS CONTROL MODULE....P1797 ... CAN TRANS. CONTROL TO ENGINE CONTROL MODULE MALFUNCTION.
;;;;;
THE CAR HAS STARTED 18 TIMES SINCE IT WAS CLEARED. i JUST DON'T TRUST THAT i'M OUT OF THE DARK YET...
Again, Thanks very much for any help or ideas you may have.

I brought up that pdf and checked my vin aginst the ones listed and mine doesn't fall into those numbers. Then in reading about it, what I have going on isn't even listed. So, I think that won't apply. It was sure worth checking into.
My battery is almost three months old and I had it tested to be totally good.

P1260 means that the KEY was not recognized by the KTM and the car will not start with a key not recognized.
Maybe a faulty KEY or transponder issue?
Try a different key? for a while to see if the fault is duplicated?
I still think it is a CAN bus issue and that the P1260 is a result of the communication failure between modules.
