Air Con filter
Had a cat that pissed in the cowl intake of my Volvo. I made a solution of household cleaner like Mr. Clean, etc. Dumped it into the cowl intakes and flushed it through with clean water. Did this several times and then followed it up with a solution using water and baking soda. That worked pretty well. You know that condensation from the AC grows mildew in it over time and creates the smell. I've heard that getting up under the dash and disassembling the duct work to clean the condenser coils/unit achieves the same thing as well as spraying the area with Lysol or similar disinfectant spray to kill the mildew.

If the air-con is smelling a bit manky, this is because it hasn't been used on a regular basis or for long enough to dry out the receiver ubder the dash.
What happens is mould can build up in the receiver...especially if the a/c has been used continuously on cold settings in very humid weather.
First is to set the controls to AUTO and TEMP at MAX.....run engine for 20 minutes with fan on HIGH....this will dry out the receiver matrix.
If the stink continues, you will need to ghet a can of air-con cleaner (available everywhere or air-con specialist)
Follow instructions for it's use and this should fix it.
To prevent this happening in the future, you air-con must be used at least once a week, set on AUTO and cabin temp normal...around 21-22 deg.C
Run it at this setting for at least 30 mins.
As the air-con system in these cars is so efficient and drains little power, I use mine year round.
Lack of use causes the above problems and can lead to compressor failure
as my eldest daughter has found out with here Mitsubishi Grandis 2.4 which uses Nippon Denso products the same as Jaguar.
She has to replace the compressor at $720 ;o]

as noted above, use it in auto mode often. Also leave it in closed cycle (inside air is being circulated) until it automatically shuts off and opens to fresh air: this cycle is used to dry the condenser and stop the musty/dirty sweat sock smell. Once I figured this out, the problem practically disappeared (returns now only if system has not been used for a couple of weeks, for the reasons noted supra).

And now for something completely different............the real reason for the smell.
It's the drip tray under the evaporator behind the dash. The pipe that sends the water off the drip tray and onto the road is either blocked or kinked so the water on the tray gently cooks in the summer sun. Get the car on a ramp and stick a long wire up the pipe to clear it. In the meantime buy a can of ac cleaner and activate it inside the car with the ac on. Alternatively you can always dismantle the dashboard if you have a couple of days with nothing else to do.
