Air Filter Suggestions?
#3
I know a lot of folks dont believe in them, but I put a K&N in ALL of my cars, trucks and motorcycles. Theyre particularly expensive for these Jags (I payed $66.99) but for me anyway, theyre worth it. I havent been on this forum very long as Im new to Jag ownership, but Im guessing a lot of folks will disagree on the suggestion. Ive been using them for over 20 years and find them to be worth the cost personally

I like the WIX brand also. O'Reilly Auto Parts stocks them.
My own opinion of K&N filters is that they're fine on race cars whose engines are rebuilt frequently, but a filter that can allow more air can allow more grit, so for the longevity of the engines on my street cars I use good quality paper filters similar to those specified by the Jaguar engineers.
Cheers,
Don

Hi JagV8,
By OE do you mean you purchase the filters from the Jaguar dealer, or you purchase filters made by the original equipment manufacturers of Jaguar-branded filters (Mann+Hummel, Valeo, Visteon, etc.)?
Cheers,
Don

Yes. And itll be the last air filter youll ever buy as it has a lifetime warranty. You will need to oil/clean it occasionally but I dont recall at the moment how many miles that takes because I rarely ever keep a car long enough to even have to do it.

I just buy from a dealer's parts dept. Changing it myself saves money. Saving a little more on what may not be the right filter doesn't seem worthwhile. I buy oil filters from the dealer, too. Oh, and pollen/cabin filters. It's a $75000 car that cost me little, a real bargain, but I can afford filters and then DIY change them!

Hi mcm97,
If I knew the year and model of your car I'd be happy to check a couple of prices for you. It's a good idea to add the year, model and engine displacement to your signature line so it's always readily available. Let us know if you need us to walk you through how to edit your signature in your Use Control Panel.
Cheers,
Don

I also have been using them for about 20 years.
My last car (Rover 3500SE) had the very same filter for 12 years.
They will last for years if cleaned and lubed properly.
I'm not saying they provide massive performance....they don't and you really
only notice a difference at high revs where the K&N breathes better.
I think the big difference is in long term ownership.
The initial purchase price is made up over long service.
I run a K&N in my 98 X308 which has covered 210,000klm and has been running a K&N for the last five years.
The various bar room myths you hear are usually brought about by people who don't service the filter correctly and end up over oiling it which allows oil vapours to upset the MAF meter.
If you use the correct K&N oil as is described and not use engine oil as I have seen done, you have no problems ;o))

Obviously if you live in a dusty dry environment, you clean it more often.
I do mine once every two years which for me works out OK.
The trick when re-oiling is to do it sparingly and allow the filter to sit for about an hour before installation.

annnnndddddd we have a new STP filter. I pulled the old one out to look at it and it wasnt clogged but it was dirty and then I saw "replaced 09-08" in sharpie on the frame of the filter. So I walked three blocks to Auto Zone and got a new one. 6 and half years is WAY too long on an air filter no matter how many times you "shake it out"
