Default aluminum thermostat housing for a 2000 XJR

Is there an aluminum thermostat housing replacement available for an XJR 2000? I see availability for the XJ8, but not an XJR. Welsh emailed me to say they don't have an aluminum housing for the XJR. Maybe I am overlooking the availability. Would anyone recommend simply getting another plastic factory Jaguar replacement? Or, are they not as much of an issue on the s/c XJR? Thanks

Have you tried having a look at the thermostat housing on your car now? You'll get a nice surprise.

Default yes that is nice

Thank you Plumsauce. That's what I get for assuming. I have an appointment with my mechanic next Wednesday to see where my coolant is disappearing to, so I wanted to have a replacement for any part or hose that could be leaking.

That could get really expensive, really fast. Why not just wait until he tells you what the problem is?

Update: Go to post# 7 for corrected JEPC JPEG file and additional information on XJR Water Outlet.

Well, looked all over the internet for XJR Thermostat Housing is no luck. Based on the JEPC (Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog) and the JTIS (Jaguar Techinican Information System), the thermostat is housed in what is called the Coolant outlet duct (outlet Pipe) also called Water Outlet.

Here are the 2 JPEG files - one from JEPC and the other from JTIS:

I found 2 posts on XJR Thermostat location and where it is housed:
You noticed that I did not use "Thermostat Housing"

First one is here on the Jaguar Forum - Posting #2 in thread - Paul Pavlik:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...acement-55508/

The XKR uses a Aluminum Thermostat Housing.

Second one is on the UK Jaguar Forum -my timing chains and tensioner experience first posting - odl21:
Jaguar Forum.co.uk • View topic - my timing chains and tensioner experience

the biggest problem i had, which was the only complication, happened as i removed the water outlet pipe from the heads. one of the 6mm steel bolts had corroded in the head and sheared off as i unscrewed it.

there was a little of the bolt left but no amount of oil, shock, heat or other trick budged it, so i started drilling it out with a right angle drill attachment.

then disaster struck when the drill bit snapped off half way through. one only way to remove the drill bit without pulling the head off, was to spend over an hour with a dremel tool at 30,000rpm using a chainsaw sharpening bit to grind the bolt and the drill bit out.

eventually i ended up with most of the bolt removed and was amazingly able to clean up the hole with a drill and re tap it to 6mm. the hole was in the right place and the water outlet bolted back up and torqued up nicely. i used new seals and coated the bolts in copper grease before putting it back.

the little preformed plastic pipes for coolant are easy to snap. i broke the one from the coolant outlet to the header tank. it was about 7 quid from the jag dealer.

Well - It looks like there are 2 different opinions on the subject. One says it is an Aluminum part and the other UK posting says it is Plastic parts????

Maybe someone here on the forum can give some hands-on information about this issue.

The Outlet Pipe assembly is part number AJ811259 for one vin range and AJ812489 for the other vin range.

Good effort, but no star.

The OP has a 2000 XJR which means a 4.0 liter supercharged engine.

The EPC reference you pulled up is from an XK 4.2 liter supercharged engine.

The JTIS reference is for a 1998 XK, but the pictured unit is the same as for a 2000 XJR.

The thread on the UK site only mentions "plastic" once:

the little preformed plastic pipes for coolant
In the JTIS reference, part #2 is called out as a "thermostat cover", which is close enough in colloquial terms.

It is aluminum. As are its mating parts.

That has a lot to do with why there is no new and improved aftermarket version. There is no need for one as compared to the plastic coolant tower on the NA engines and hence no market.

Hi Plum
Thank you for your informative reply. The Supercharged version of the XJ seems to have a improved design elements over NA XJ models.

I went back to the JEPC and I made sure I accessed the Engine Coolant components for XJ Supercharged 4.0 Engine:
Here is the JPEG file:

aluminum thermostat housing for a 2000 XJR-xjr-coolant-outlet-pipe-2.jpg

You can see that #1 on the Diagram is first listed as the Outlet Pipe, then it is listed as the Thermostat Housing. Maybe either part name can be used to identify this part?

The part number vary by Vin numbers and also seem to vary by Engine numbers:

NCC2241AD NCC2241AE AJ83968 AJ81981

To VIN (818581)
NCC2241AD

From VIN (818582) To Engine (9810140000)
4.0 Litre supercharged
NCC2241AE

From Engine (0108130000)
4.0 Litre supercharged
AJ83968

From Engine (9810150000) To Engine (0108122359)
4.0 Litre supercharged
AJ81981

Part# AJ81981 is the current part number (all the rest are shown as superceded on Gaudin Jaguar Parts website). Their discounted price is $463.12

Here is the JPEG file from my earlier post that I extracted from the JTIS software:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/a...utlet-pipe-jpg

Thanks again Plum for your post confirming that the Coolant components for XJR are Aluminum.
