Another Trnasmission Problem

Good Afternoon all. This is my first time posting on this site although I have been a patron of it for quite some time. My problem is I have 1998 Jaguar XJ8. Over the past months or so my transmission has shifted slightly hard between 1st and 3rd. The shift shock was barely noticeable, but I took it to a mechanic and got it checked out and they told me it was fine. And so I continued to drive it. I had read a post where a guy was having my same problem and his tranny later died, so I kept driving it cautiously and didn't notice it getting any worse. However yesterday i was parking and shifted into reverse and the car jumped and seemed to have stalled but as I gave it some gas it jumped and began to move. So I decided to just drive it home and park it but after that, whenever I came to a light or a stop and tried to accelerate, the car wouldn't move and then it would jump. And then the car went into transmission fault mode so it stays in 4th or 5th. I don't know what to do. I'm sure the tranny is bad, but i don't know whether to buy a new one, rebuild this one, or just scrap the car since I've had other problems with it in the past. Also since I'm a student, cost is important and if you could give me ballpark figures on cost that would also be appreciated. Thanks.

Try to get the code from the transmission fault. If it isn't a major problem, the fault code will just reset with the restart of the vehicle. If the code and problems remain indefinately, and the trans stays in limp mode (3rd gear) you most likely broke a drum. And if you have driven the car in limp mode for a little bit, you probably smoked most of the clutches as well.
